Victorville Newborn Photographer – McKenn Pendergrass

When I named our daughter Emelia, I knew that it wasn’t a very common name, especially the way that we chose to spell it… Little did I know I’d meet another baby girl with the same name so soon!  Which is funny, because I had a Baby Plan baby with the same name as my son during his first year too.  Haha!  I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know this sweet girl’s mama, who was the student midwife at the last two births that I’ve photographed.  I was so excited to meet this little darling!

Tell us your story:  I’m LaReina and my husband is AJ. We’ve been married for almost 4 years and have two daughters now. Ysabel who is almost 2 and now Emelia who was born on Valentine’s Day. Emelia was our second homebirth. It was a longer and harder birth than my first one, but still very fulfilling and satisfying. I’m a student midwife and I’m always amazed at how every birth I am privileged to witness is so different. Emelia’s birth was definitely different than my first, which took my surprise. A little bit of a funny story related to her birth is that I was adamant about her not being born on Valentine’s Day. I told my midwives that she would either come on Friday the 13th or Sunday the 15th, but not on the 14th. Around 730ish or so on Valentine’s Day, after being in labor for 30+ hours, my midwife reminded me of what I had said. I told her I changed my mind, she could come right there and then. She told me to tell Emelia that is was okay to be born on Valentine’s Day, that I took back what I had said. So I did. I said it out loud (between contractions) and told her she could come now. And she did. Things started to progress and I had her not long after that.

How did you choose your baby’s name?   We had named our first daughter after my great great grandmother, so when we found out that we were having another girl, Aj suggested the name of one of his great grandmothers, and I loved it right away.

Who do you think your little one looks like most?  I think she looks like her sister the most. . . And we get an even amount of comments that our first daughter looks like both of us. . . So, k guess she looks like Ysabel, who looks like both of us equally?

What is your favorite part about having your baby here with you?  I love being able to breastfeed. I wasn’t able to breastfeed with my first daughter and I really missed that. This time around has been a whole new experience and I’m really enjoying the closeness.

Any advice for new parents?  I don’t feel like I have a whole lot of advice to give at this point on adjusting from 1 to 2. My only advice would be to stay home as much as you can. Don’t set expectations for yourself about getting out, or how clean your house should be. As long as the three of you are fed, safe and happy, everything else can wait. At least that’s what I’ve been telling myself.  I cant live without my Baby K’Tan! I suppose any soft baby carrier would be a must, but I hand dyed my organic white K’tan rainbow colors and I absolutely love it. Emelia doesn’t nap by herself very often if ever, so this has helped me out a lot. I’m able to get things done still. My moms advice has helped me adjust to going from one to two the most. Being a parent to two is a lot harder than being a parent to one. Especially when the first one is dangerously adventurous.

I love sleep babies, and I love awake babies… and this sweet boy gave me the best of both worlds!  Isn’t he just the sweetest thing?!

.

Tell us your story:  Hello, my name is Elvie and I am a proud mother of 2 (Ayla 19months) & my newborn Ezra (a whole 1 month as I write this) My husband and I are happy to welcome our new little guy, we feel like he completes our little family. His older sister loves to give him kisses.

How did you choose your baby’s name?  I first heard the name Ezra in high school and I’ve just always liked it. It’s only after deciding to use that name that I found out it was biblical. Plus I like how it compliments his sister’s name Ayla.

Who do you think your little one looks like most?  I think my son looks like me, which I am ecstatic about since my daughter is the spitting image of her father. I did want one of our children to look like me.

What is your favorite part about having your baby here with you?  Our baby did have to stay in the hospital for 8 days so finally bringing him home was an exciting day! It is indescribable to hold in my arms the little person who was kicking me from the inside. My favorite part is his little hand holding onto one of my fingers while I nurse him.

Any tips for making your hospital stay more comfortable?  Was there anything that you did to prepare your for delivery, or that you felt helped you during labor?  My husband went out and bought some doughnuts for the nurses, they really appreciated it. Most people don’t think about the people whose job it is to help us during such an important event. Since this was my second delivery, I wasn’t nervous. Reading and learning about the process is the best way to be prepared.

What things have helped you adjust to parenthood the most?  Anything you can’t live without?  My son loves to be held, he wakes up or cries the instant I put him down. We bought a baby sling and that has helped me be productive during the day. More importantly though, I couldn’t survive this transition if it weren’t for my husband, he has been amazingly supportive.

How has the adjustment been going from 1 to 2?  Any tips for helping an older sibling adjust to baby?  Like I said before, I would be a mess if it weren’t for my husband. He is doing most of the work taking care of our daughter since I am dedicating most of my time nursing our newborn. Plus he’ll still help me out with nighttime diaper changes, getting me water, cleaning the house.  As for helping our older daughter adjust, we talked to her before hand about her new brother that was coming. She would kiss and rub my belly. She was amazing from the moment she met him. She never showed any signs of jealousy. She will just come over give him a kiss on his head and then continue playing.

Favorite baby related funny story:  Going from changing a little girl diapers to a little boys diapers is more challenging. It has only been a month and I’ve had to use cat like reflexes to close a diaper back up to avoid getting hit mid stream. I just know one of these days he will get me though.

Birth is such a beautiful thing… but sometimes not everything goes as planned.  These photos are from a home birth that I had the privilege of attending back in December.  Mama had some complications and ended up transferring to the hospital.  Scroll down to read her story in her own words.

This little girl caused quite a ruckus when she was born: -Planned homebirth with Alina Hamrick, midwife  -Crazy contractions that evened out then disappeared then ramped up again -born in our living room with Daddy and Gramma present to see her beautiful eyes and so much hair -Momma had complications and had to be rushed to the hospital where she was separated from her precious baby girl for 2-1/2 days! -God stepped into each part of the process and gave us a grand memory to share of his faithfulness amidst our earthly chaos. We are beyond blessed and so thankful for all of our angels – earthbound and spiritual – who saw us through the whole process.

What was your reaction to seeing your baby for the first time? She’s the smallest baby – but soooooooo beautiful! The little slippery body just adds to the amazement in my mind that God MADE this beautiful little girl inside me.

What is your favorite part about having your baby here with you? Finally getting to see and smell and touch and really know this little person and filling a gap in our family that we never knew we had!

How did you choose your baby’s name? The hubby and I wanted an ‘L’ name to bookend the kids’ names with. I was stuck on Lucy, but he didn’t like it. Being the Gilmore Girls fan that I am, I realized I had an ‘L’ name in mind – never expecting him to go for it. He surprised me with embracing ‘Lorelai’ and we now have a good name story.

Who do you think your little one looks like most?  At the moment, her littlest big brother. Hubby thinks she looks like me, I can’t see it.

What things have helped you adjust to parenthood the most? Focus on the Family’s ministry and my parents taking the kids once a week so I can find my bearings. We never would have had 4 otherwise!

Anything you can’t live without? Other moms telling me how ‘normal’ my kids are – especially when I’m so frustrated.
